Lions compete at KU Relays
Jones has another impressive showing

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- It was another week, another record for Danee Jones.

The senior thrower and two-time All-American on the Missouri Southern women's track & field team boosted her school record in the weight throw and guaranteed herself a spot at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, highlighting Friday's MSSU action at the KU Relays at the Anschutz Pavillion.

Jones (Clayton, Mo.) became the first Missouri Southern female to top 60 feet in the event as she finished second with an NCAA-II automatic national qualifying throw of 61 feet, 9.75 inches. She was second only to Oklahoma State's Delisa McClain. Jones' effort would be an NCAA Division I provisional mark and it topped her school record, set last week at the University of Arkansas, by more than two feet.

Jones also finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 43'-9" while freshman Jessica Selby (Galena, Mo.) was eighth with a mark of 42'-9".

Those were just three of seven top-10 finishes for the MSSU women on Friday at KU. Sophomore Iashia Castle (Kansas City, Mo.) placed sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 37'-0.5". Castle was also 10th in the long jump (16'-7.75"). Senior Melissa Turner (Claremore, Okla.) tied for 10th in the pole vault (10'-6") and the MSSU 4x400-meter relay squad finished ninth in 4:06.89, the Lions' best time in the event this year.

Missouri Southern's men got eight top-10 finishes on the day, including a first-place finish for junior Matt Campbell (Worthington, Ind.) in the pole vault. Campbell, already an NCAA-II automatic qualifier, won the pole vault on misses over MSSU unattached performer Chris Turner (St. Louis, Mo.). Both vaulted 16'-4.75". Freshman Russell Ellis (Caddo Gap, Ark.) was sixth in the event, clearing 15'-5".

Three Lions collected top-10 showings in the shot put, led by junior Mike Hines (Miami, Fla.) fourth place throw of 50'-11". Freshman Nick Vince (Polmont, Falkirk, Scotland) was seventh (48'-1.25") and freshman Adam Sims (Herculaneum, Mo.) placed 10th (45'-5").

The strong showings didn't stop there in the field events. Senior Michael Stewart (Kansas City, Mo.) placed ninth in the long jump with a team season-best mark of 22'-2.5".

On the track, senior Neil Hombs (Boonville, Mo.) earned a 10th-place showing in the 600-yard run, as he finished in 1:14.16, the Lions' best time in the event this year. Hombs also ran a leg on the Lions 4x400-meter relay team that was ninth in 3:25.10.

Freshman Chris Farmer (Carl Junction, Mo.) tallied the Lions best marks of the season in the 60-meter dash (7.07) and 200-meter dash (22.68). Freshman Sam McDonald (Imperial, Mo.) had the team's best time of the year in the 60-meter hurdles (8.99).

Like Farmer, freshman Lynita Bridges (Kansas City, Mo.) had the MSSU women's two best times this year in the 60-meter dash (8.11) and 200 (26.72). Sophomore Sarah Wallace (Branson, Mo.) notched the top 600-yard run time of the year (1:31.11) and junior Dionne Prince (Milwaukee, Wis.) set a team season-best time of 9.57 in the 60-meter hurdles.

The Lions continue their indoor season next weekend with their largest indoor meet of the season, the Baymont Inn/Fazoli's Open on Friday and Saturday on the St. John's Track in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. On Sunday, the meet continues with high school-only competition.
