FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Yet another honor for Still
Senior named region’s top female
women’s track & field athlete
Mary Still’s
resume continues to grow.
The Missouri Southern State University
senior from Carthage, Mo. was named the NCAA Division II South
Central Region Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Athlete
of the Year, the United States Track Coaches Association
announced on Thursday.
It marks the second regional award of the
2003-04 academic year for Still, who was named the South
Central’s Co-Athlete of the Year during the indoor
campaign.
This outdoor season, Still was an automatic
qualifier for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field
Championships in the 400-meter hurdles as she recorded the
nation’s top time (58.50 seconds). She was the
Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion in
the 400-meter dash and runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles.
On Thursday in Walnut, Calif., Still
advanced to Saturday’s final of the 400 hurdles, by
winning her heat with a time of 60.10 seconds. She ranks third
heading into Saturday evening’s final.
Still, formerly known as Mary Garrett, is
also a finalist for the MIAA’s prestigious Ken B. Jones
Award, an honor presented to the conference’s male and
female student-athletes of the year. In the 2004 outdoor
season, she turned in season-bests of 24.71 in the 200-meter
dash, 55.79 in the 400 meters and 58.50 in the 400 hurdles. All
of those marks were at least NCAA-II provisional marks.
For her career, Still is a 24-time All-MIAA
performer, a six-time MIAA champion, and a five-time
All-America, including national runner-up honors twice in the
400-meter hurdles. She has twice been named to the CoSIDA
Academic All-America team and graduated earlier this month with
a 3.981 GPA as a double major in psychology and English.
