FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Still named to Academic All-America Team
Senior is a first-team selection for a
second time
Mary Still (Carthage,
Mo.), a senior in 2003-04 on the Missouri Southern State
University women’s track & field squad, was named to
the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
Academic All-America Team announced today.
Still was one of 15 selected for first-team
honors on the squad. It marked the third CoSIDA Academic
All-America honor for Still in her career at MSSU. She was a
third-team selection in 2001 and earned first-team recognition
in 2003.
Last month, Still collected her sixth
career All-America honor by finishing as runner-up in the
400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track &
Field Championships. It marked the third time in four years
that Still has been national runner-up in the event.
She’s a 24-time All-MIAA performer
and a six-time conference champion. Also a finalist for the
MIAA’s Ken B. Jones Award, honoring the league’s
student-athletes of the year, Still graduated with honors last
month with degrees in psychology and English. She ended with a
3.981 grade-point average for her undergraduate career.
In 2004, Still was the MIAA indoor and
outdoor champion in the 400-meter dash. She also placed second
outdoors in the 400-meter hurdles. Her accomplishments at the
conference indoor meet played a major role in the Lions’
first-ever MIAA track & field title. She not only won the
400-meter dash, but placed third in the 200-meter dash and
60-meter hurdles and was fourth in the 60-meter dash. Still
also ran a leg on the third-place 4x400-meter relay squad at
the indoor meet.
Still also won two regional athlete of the
year awards from the United States Track Coaches Association.
During the indoor season, she shared the South Central Region
honor before winning it outright in the outdoor campaign.
Also in 2004, Still was named the winner of
the E.O. & Virginia Humphrey Award, given annually to
Missouri Southern’s top student-athlete. She was also
selected as MSSU’s most outstanding female athlete for
the second straight year.
Still was one of six from the MIAA to earn
Academic All-America honors. She was joined on the first team
by Emporia State’s Rachel Goetz and
Missouri-Rolla’s Kate Hamera.
