Campbell, Jones earn player of the week honors

Four Missouri Southern State University spring sports student-athletes, including sophomore pole vaulter Matt Campbell (Worthington, Ind.) and junior thrower Danee Jones (Clayton, Mo.) earned Wilson/MIAA Player of the Week accolades on Tuesday, the MIAA announced.
Campbell, a 5-foot-9 and 155-pound sophomore, secured a spot at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships with his effort in the pole vault at the Pittsburg State/Wendy’s Invitational on Saturday (March 27).
He won the event with a vault of 17’-0”, leading a 1-2 Lion finish in the event. The mark was just 0.75” off the MSSU school record and is an NCAA-II automatic qualifying performance.
Campbell, the 2004 MIAA indoor champion in the pole vault, is a graduate of White River High School and transferred to Southern from Neosho County (Kan.) Community College.
Jones, a 5-foot-9 junior, provisionally qualified for nationals in her third event, and improved her mark in another event during the Pittsburg State/Wendy’s Invitational on Saturday (March 27).
She placed third in the hammer with a provisional qualifying distance of 163’-1”. Jones also improved her provisional mark in the discus with a second-place toss of 150’-5”.
Jones, a graduate of Clayton High School, also won the shot put with a toss of 41’-9.75”.
Others to win the award on March 31 included sophomore softball pitcher Amy Schneider (Garland, Texas) and senior women’s tennis player Sheryl Posch (Parsons, Kan.).
