Still named a finalist for Ken B. Jones Award
Women’s track senior one of three vying for coveted league honor

Mary Still (Carthage, Mo.), a senior on the Missouri Southern State University women’s track & field team, is one of three finalists in the running for the Ken B. Jones Award, which recognizes the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association’s top male and female student-athletes.

Joining Still as female finalists for the award are Kate Hamera from the University of Missouri-Rolla and Abbey Oshel from Pittsburg State. Each of the three female finalists are track & field student-athletes.

Still, a five-time All-America, is one of 11 Lions heading to the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend in Walnut, Calif. She will compete in the 400-meter hurdles, an event in which she is a three-time All-America and a two-time national runner-up.

Honorees are judged on athletic accomplishments, academic accomplishments and community service. An 11 member panel, including a representative from each school, selects the winners.

In addition to earning five All-America honors in track & field, Still is a 24-time All-MIAA performer and an academic All-America. She graduated with honors earlier this month with a double major in psychology and English. She was co-graduate of the year in MSSU’s honors program, posting a 3.981 grade-point average.

In community service, Still has participated in items ranging from the MIAA Canned Food Drive to the Special Olympics and Challenger Soccer. She has also performed and presented psychology research at the Great Plains and PERK conventions.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must have a 3.00 grade-point average as of April 1, and must have completed at least their junior season of eligibility in the 2003-04 academic year.

Male finalists for the award include Emporia State football player Tyler Paul, Northwest Missouri State football player John Edmonds, and University of Missouri-Rolla swimmer Jack Pennuto.
