Two collect MIAA Athlete of the Week honor
Southern’s Smith, Still earn MIAA
weekly award
Two members of the Missouri Southern State
University indoor track & field team were named Mid-America
Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athletes of the Week on
Tuesday.
Senior Mary
Still (Carthage, Mo.) collected
the award after earning an NCAA Division II provisional
qualifying mark among her three victories at the MSSU/Radio
Shack Open last Saturday.
She won the 60-meter hurdles and 200- and
400-meter dashes en route to top scoring female honors at last
weekend’s meet. Still’s time of 56.97 seconds in
the 400 was good enough for a provisional qualifying time for
the national championships. She won the 60-meter hurdles in
9.16 seconds and collected the 200-meter crown in 25.66
seconds.
She currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division
II in the 400-meter dash.
Her 30 points helped the Lions to a team
total of 122 and the team championship. Still, formerly known
as Mary Garrett before her marriage this past summer, accounted
for three of Missouri Southern’s seven wins in the meet.
Junior Arley
Smith (Pierce City, Mo.)
received the MIAA honor after improving his provisional mark in
the 35-pound weight throw by more than 18 inches. He won the
event by more than five feet and helped the Lions to the team
championship with 107.5 points in the 16-team field.
Smith’s winning throw of
60’-7.25” currently ranks third in NCAA Division
II.
Missouri Southern’s track & field
teams will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 31) at the
University of Kansas Invitational. The Lions’ next home
meet is set for Feb. 13-14 as Southern’s hosts the
Baymont Inn/Fazoli’s Open.
