FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jones named MIAA Athlete of the Week
Junior thrower had provisional marks in two
events
Missouri Southern State University’s Danee Jones (Clayton,
Mo.) was named Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association Field Athlete of the Week today in the sport of
women’s track & field.
Jones, a 5-foot-9 junior, recorded NCAA
Division II provisional qualifying marks in both the weight
throw and the shot put last weekend for the Lions at the
University of Arkansas Invitational.
She placed second in the weight throw with
a toss of 57 feet, 1.50 inches, less than three feet shy of the
automatic qualifying standard. Jones also picked up a
fourth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 43-10.
In each event, the only competitors to
better her efforts were from NCAA Division I schools.
Jones, a graduate of Clayton High School
and the daughter of Celeste Bradley, is the defending MIAA
indoor champion in the weight throw and earned All-America
accolades in the event during her sophomore season. She holds
MSSU and conference records in the weight throw.
Jones and the Lions are preparing for the
first of three home meets this indoor season. Southern will
host the MSSU/Radio Shack Open on Friday and Saturday (Jan.
23-24) on the St. John’s Track in the Leggett & Platt
Athletic Center.
