FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Two sign with women’s track &
field squad
Missouri Southern head women’s track
& field coach Patty Vavra announced today the addition of
two current high school seniors for the 2004-05 academic year.
Rachel Minard
(Webb City, Mo.) and Alison Walker (West Plains, Mo.) have signed on to join
the Lions track & field program.
Minard is a three-time all-state performer
in the 300-meter hurdles, including a Missouri Class 3 state
championship as a junior in 2003. She placed sixth in the 300
hurdles as a freshman in 2001 before taking fifth in the event
as a sophomore. Then last year, Minard set a school record with
her time of 45.31 seconds en route to the state crown. She also
placed third in the 100-meter hurdles at the state meet as a
junior. She also holds the school record in the 100 hurdles
(15.4 seconds).
The 5-foot-8 Minard, whose senior track
season is still to come, is also a three-time all-conference
volleyball player at setter/outside hitter.
Walker also has her senior track &
field campaign ahead of her, after placing fifth in the Class 4
State Championships in the 400-meter dash as a junior. Walker
turned in a school record time of 57.64 seconds in that event
at the state meet on her way to the fifth-place showing.
Walker, 5-7, has also qualified for the
state championships in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. In 2003,
she turned in a West Plains school mark of 25.54 seconds at the
state meet in the 200. Her best 100-meter dash time is 12.23
seconds.
A three-time all-district and
all-conference performer, Walker has helped her team to
back-to-back district crowns, and two top-five state MSHSAA
Championships finishes.
The Missouri Southern women’s track
& field program produced two All-Americans in 2003, in Mary
Still, formerly Mary Garrett, and Danee Jones. Still was
national runner-up, for her third outdoor All-America honor, in
the 400-meter hurdles during the outdoor season, and also
finished seventh in the 400-meter dash indoors. Jones was an
All-America in the weight throw during the 2003 indoor
campaign. The Lion women finished sixth in both the MIAA indoor
and outdoor meets last season.
