Women’s Tennis earns spot in NCAA Tournament
Lions to meet Northwest Missouri State in first round

The season will continue for the Missouri Southern State University women’s tennis team. The Lions, under head coach Jane Posch, have earned a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament, which begins May 7.
Southern is the No. 7 seed in the North Central Region and draws Northwest Missouri State (18-8), the No. 2 seed, at Maryville to begin the tournament. MIAA champion Washburn (20-5), the top seed for the tourney and the only other MIAA representative in the field, is also a host of the North Central Region’s first and second rounds, which are slated for May 7-9.
The Lions finished the 2004 regular season with a 12-11 overall record. Others to comprise the North Central Region include Minnesota-Duluth (10-7), St. Cloud State (18-6), Nebraska-Omaha (15-5), North Dakota (14-4) and Metro State (13-5).
The Lions are led by the No. 4-ranked doubles team in the region in senior Sheryl Posch (Parsons, Kan.) and junior Lacey McMunn (Parsons, Kan.), who enter the regional with a 16-10 record. Posch, also the No. 9-ranked singles performer in the region, is 10-11 at No. 1 singles.
Posch and McMunn have won six straight doubles matches entering the tournament.
The other two doubles teams for the Lions, freshman Barb Gombosi (Maribor, Slovenia) and senior Kim McMunn (Parsons, Kan.) and freshman Kristen Meschede (Grain Valley, Mo.) and senior Amy Stredney (Abilene, Kan.), are also well above .500 on the year. The team of Gombosi/K. McMunn holds a record of 21-8, while Meschede/Stedney stands at 16-9.
Kim McMunn is also 14-3 on the year at No. 4 singles. Gombosi is 11-4 at No. 3 singles.
The winners of each first- and second-round tournament will advance to the NCAA Division II finals in Altamonte Springs, Fla. with the Central Florida Sports Commission, the Sunshine State Conference and Rollins College serving as co-hosts, May 12-15. The women’s championships are part of the NCAA Division II National Championships Festival, which will feature six Division II championships.
