Six Tennis Lions collect All-MIAA honors
Jane Posch named Co-Coach of the Year, Gombosi Freshman of the Year

Each of the six starters on the Missouri Southern State University women’s tennis team earned mention on the All-MIAA team announced today. Head coach Jane Posch was also honored as league’s co-coach of the year.
The Lions had two first-team selections on the all-conference team, in senior Kim McMunn (Parsons, Kan.) and freshman Barb Gombosi (Maribor, Slovenia). McMunn holds a 14-3 record at No. 4 singles this year, while Gombosi posted an 11-4 mark in the No. 3 singles slot. Gombosi and McMunn also comprise the Lions No. 2 doubles team, which currently stands at 21-8 on the year.
Gombosi also collected MIAA Freshman of the Year honors.
Second-team honors went to freshman Kristen Meschede (Grain Valley, Mo.) for No. 5 singles. Meschede holds an 11-11 record in her first season of collegiate competition.
Meschede was one of four Lions also listed on the honorable mention squad. She, along with teammate Amy Stredney (Abilene, Kan.), were given honorable mention for their play at No. 3 doubles. Meschede and Stredney hold a 16-9 doubles mark this year.
Also on the honorable mention squad were senior Sheryl Posch (Parsons, Kan.) and junior Lacey McMunn (Parsons, Kan.). Posch, Southern’s No. 1 singles player and twice an MIAA Player of the Week this year, is 10-11 this year and currently the No. 9-ranked singles performer in the North Central Region. McMunn, 7-10 in No. 2 singles play, also teams with Posch on the Lions’ No. 1 doubles contingent. They’re the No. 4-ranked team in the region with a 16-10 ledger.
Posch, in her first full year as the Lions head coach, led the team to a regular season record of 12-10, including 3-2 in the MIAA. Last weekend, Southern advanced to the semifinal round of the MIAA Championships, but fell to eventual tourney champion Washburn (Kan.).
However, Southern’s season did not end there. MSSU is one of three MIAA women’s teams that will participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament. Southern plays at Northwest Missouri State on May 8 in the first round of the North Central Region bracket. Washburn is hosting another four-team North Central Region bracket. The two bracket winners advance to Altamonte Springs, Fla., May 12-16, for the NCAA Division II National Championships Festival.
