FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wachsman announces seven signees for
women’s soccer
The 2004 edition of the Missouri Southern
women’s soccer team will have a new look, as the team
returns just six players with previous college experience.
Head coach Trevor Wachsman announced today
that seven players have signed on to further their soccer
careers at Missouri Southern State University.
“I’m very happy to sign this
large number of players early on,” Wachsman said.
“Many of them are going to be needed to contribute
quickly since we’ll be such a young team. They’re
all very capable of stepping in and filling some needed roles.
“This is a very positive group and
they’re motivated to help push Missouri Southern
women’s soccer to the next level.”
Wachsman, who begins his second year as the
Lions’ head coach, said he’s still actively
recruiting for the upcoming season.
The following is a look at the latest
signees, with comments from Wachsman, for the MSSU
women’s soccer program:
Amy Davis, 5-5, Midfielder/Defender
Fenton, Mo. (Rockwood Summit HS)
A three-year varsity starter for the
Falcons of coach Chris Kappler ... a two-time first-team
All-Suburban South Conference pick and the team’s
defensive player of the year in 2003.
“Amy is a tenacious defender that
works extremely hard and she should bring some consistency to
the midfield or defender positions, wherever she fits in best.
She has played at a very high level.
Meredith Helbig, 5-6, Defender
Fenton, Mo. (Rockwood Summit HS)
A teammate of Davis’ at Rockwood
Summit, she was an all-conference pick in 2002 and a three-year
starter ... teamed with Davis, Helbig helped the Falcons to
Class 4 quarterfinal appearances in 2002 and 2003 and to the
state championship game in 2001.
“She’s another skilled player
from the St. Louis area. Her technical skills are very sound.
She’s a great all-around athlete.”
Lauren Kurelac, 5-9, Forward
Blue Springs, Mo. (Blue Springs HS)
A three-year letterwinner in soccer for
coach Doug McLagan’s Wildcats ... helped the BSHS to
conference and district titles and to the state quarterfinals
during her career.
“Lauren is a more physical player who
provides a presence at forward. She can hold the ball and play
with her back to the goal. She can create opportunities not
only for herself, but also for her teammates.”
Holly Robinson, 5-8, Defender,
Springfield, Mo. (Glendale HS)
A first-team all-district and first-team
All-Southwest Region selection as a senior for the Falcons of
coach Jeff Rogers ... helped her team to district titles in
2001 and 2003, and a state quarterfinal berth as a senior ...
was a four-year starter at GHS.
“Holly is another who comes from a
very powerful high school team. She possesses speed and
technical savvy that you don’t always see in a
defender.”
Lindsay Robinson, 5-6, Midfielder
Lansing, Kan. (Lansing HS)
A three-year starter at midfield for coach
Jon Parry’s Wildcats ... collected first-team all-state
honors as a senior and scored 27 goals in three years ... also
a two-time, first-team all-league pick and was a three-year
member of the all-academic team.
“Lindsey comes from a smaller town,
but she has adapted and excelled at every level she has played
at. She plays simple and quick and has a great personality.
Kaney Tyler, 5-7, Goalkeeper
Topeka, Kan. (Seaman HS)
A four-year starter at keeper, she earned
all-city and all-state honors for the Vikings of coach Louis
DiLenardo ... named team MVP in each of her last two seasons.
“With no returning goalkeepers, it
was good to sign a keeper of Kaney’s quality. She comes
with high recommendations from all of her previous coaches. She
has a dominant presence in goal and is very
athletic.”
Erin Whelan, 5-3, Midfielder/Forward
Belleville, Ill. (Belleville Township East
HS)
An all-metro and all-conference performer
as a four-year starter coach Mark Lasley’s Lancer’s
... also an accomplished cheerleader and gymnast.
“Erin is a tremendous athlete with a
lot of speed. She has been a competitive cheerleader and a
gymnast. Her speed and quickness make her a threat whenever she
touches the ball.”
