FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo. -- In a rare match that featured two penalty kicks in the second half and overtime, Stephanie Heines put in the deciding penalty shot that gave the Missouri Southern Lions a 2-1 double-overtime win over the Missouri Western Griffons Saturday night (Sept. 26) at Fred Hughes Stadium. The match was played at Fred Hughes Stadium due to a rain-soaked Hal Bodon Field. The match remained scoreless until the 82:21 mark, when the excitement began. Danai Noftz broke the scoreless tie by connecting on an absolute blast from 20 yards away off a free kick by Shannon Kuhn. The Lions (3-7, 1-5 MIAA) held that lead for the next five minutes when the Griffons were awarded a penalty kick that Jessica Martin put in that tied the score with 2:12 left in regulation. Heines then won it for the Lions with her own penalty kick at the 106:19 mark of the second overtime. The match was close on all fronts, as the Lions held a 12-10 shots edge, including an 10-4 advantage in the second half and overtime periods. Randi Russell made two saves for the Lions, while Joyce Endicott stopped four shots for the Griffons (4-6, 2-4 MIAA). The Lions will remain at home and host Emporia State on Thursday night (Oct. 1) at 7 p.m.
