No. 5 UNO knocks off Lions, 4-1

Box Score

Omaha, Neb. -- With the match knotted at 1-1, the No. 5-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 4-1 Saturday afternoon (Sept. 20) at Omaha, Neb.

UNO (4-1, 2-1 MIAA) wasted little time getting going as Amanda Iwansky scored from the lower left corner from Lindsey Nealon just 1 minute into the contest to put the Mavericks ahead.

The Lions (2-5, 0-4 MIAA) quickly answered back when Stephanie Heines found Sarah Evers on a cross to the middle of the goalie box and Evers put it in the net at the 4:33 mark to even the match.

MaryClaire Murnan then gave the Mavericks the lead for good by taking advantage of an open net in the 30th minute that gave UNO a 2-1 lead.

Hilary Horvatic and Becca Swanson each added insurance goals for UNO in the 71st and 79th minute of the second half to put the finishing touches on the victory.

The Lions hung in for most of the match despite being out-shot 24-3 overall and 13-2 on-goal.

Freshman Randi Russell made a career-high nine saves for the Lions, while UNO goalkeeper Lauren Fox made one save in 82:15 of action before giving way to Elizabeth Odorisio for the final 7:45.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Lions as they will next host the current No. 10-ranked and undefeated (6-0) Truman Bulldogs on Thursday night (Sept. 25) at 7 p.m.
