Llewellyn leads Lions to season-opening overtime win over Abilene Christian

Joplin, Mo.. --  Nikki Llewellyn kicked off her senior year and the 2008 campaign in style by scoring late in the second half and in the second overtime as the Missouri Southern Lions rallied for a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the Abilene Christian Wildcats Friday night (Aug. 29) at Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions fell behind when Jackie Gentile headed a shot in from Jordan Reese in the 46th minute that put the Wildcats up 1-0.

ACU held that lead until Llewellyn pulled the Lions even on an assist from Michelle Dimza with just over three minutes remaining in regulation.

Llewellyn then struck again in the 104th minute on a pass from Shannon Kuhn to give the Lions the dramatic victory.

The two goals are the 39th and 40th career scores for Llewellyn, adding to her all-time school record and were part of a game-high seven shot-attempts.

Southern out-shot the Wildcats 20-14 overall, including a 10-3 bulge in the second half.  The Lions held a slim 10-9 edge in shots-on-goal.

Lions' goalkeeper Lisa Senkle and ACU goalie Chrissy Lawson each recorded eight saves.
