Mavericks defeat Lions, 2-0

Joplin, Mo. -- The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks scored a goal in the first and second half to defeat the Missouri Southern Lions 2-0 Thursday night (Oct. 30) at Hal Bodon Field.

Amanda Iwansky scored a breakaway goal at the 23:51 mark of the first half that put the Mavericks ahead 1-0.

The Lions stayed within a goal until MaryClaire Murnan found a loose ball in the box off an assist from Lindsey Nealon in the 75th minute for UNO's second score.

Nikki Llewellyn hit a good shot from 20 yards away with two minutes remaining, but UNO goalkeeper Lauren Fox made the stop.

Llewellyn and Stephanie Heines each had two shots to lead Southern.  Iwansky had a game-high four shots for the Mavericks (11-5, 9-5 MIAA).

The Lions (4-11-1, 2-10-1 MIAA) were out-shot 12-9 overall and 7-5 on-goal.

Randi Russell made five saves for the Lions, while Fox and starter Elizabeth Odorisio combined for five saves for the Mavericks.
