FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Box Score The match marks the third straight 1-1 draw the Lions and Lady Blues have encountered. The two schools also tied 1-1 earlier this year in Topeka and in last year's NCAA Tournament matchup, with WU advancing via penalty kicks. Unfortunately for the Lions, the tie eliminates them consideration for the MIAA Postseason Tournament. Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) put the Lions on top in the first half with her 16th goal in the 34th minute off an assist from Ashley Turner (Columbia, Mo.) The score gives Llewellyn 36 career goals and moves her into a tie with Ashley Munnelly for first-place on the MSSU career goals list. The Lions (10-5-3, 6-5-2 MIAA) maintained that lead until Angela Wiseman scored after a corner kick at the 76:54 mark to even the match, 1-1. WU (9-5-5, 7-2-4 MIAA) out-shot the Lions 4-1 in the two overtime periods but neither squad could put one in the net. Southern's best scoring chance came when Amy Davis (Fenton, Mo.) headed a shot inside the box, but the shot hit the post and goalie Jenny Persons recorded a save. Overall, the Lady Blues held a 15-11 shots advantage, but the Lions maintained an 8-6 edge in shots-on-goal. Llewellyn led the Lions with three shots. Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made five saves for the Lions and Persons stopped seven shots for Washburn. The Lions will wrap up the 2007 season with Senior Day against Emporia State tomorrow (Oct. 27) at 4 p.m. |
