FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo.. -- Atefeh Heivary scored with 2:29 left in the first overtime to snap a scoreless tie and give the Southwest Baptist Bearcats a 1-0 victory over the Missouri Southern Lions in an important MIAA matchup for both squads Friday night (Oct. 5) at Hal Bodon Field. Heivary's goal came at the 97:31 mark off an assist from Jenelle Stewart. Lisa Senkle (Tracy, Calif.) made seven saves for the Lions, (8-3-2, 4-3-1 MIAA), including a spectacular stop on a shot from Stewart in the box with 43:52 left in regulation to keep the match scoreless. Aline Lopes recorded four saves for SBU (6-4-2, 5-2-1 MIAA). Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) led the Lions with four shots and narrowly missed winning the match for Southern with 1:54 left in the second half when her shot from about 10 yards out sailed just wide. Christina Kleekamp (Defiance, Mo.) had two shots for the Lions, both on-goal. Christina Swartz had a team-high three shots for the Bearcats. Overall, the Bearcats out-shot the Lions 11-8, with an 8-4 edge in shots-on-goal. The Lions out-shot the Bearcats 5-4 in the first half, but SBU rebounded to win the shots battle 6-3 in the second and 1-0 in the overtime period. MSSU and SBU entered the contest tied in the MIAA with identical 4-2-1 conference marks. With the Bearcats' win, the two schools have tied the season series since the Lions were victorious 1-0 in Bolivar, Mo. earlier this season (Aug. 31). The Lions will continue MIAA action by playing at Missouri Western next Friday (Oct. 12) at 7 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo. Southern won the season's first matchup with the Griffons 5-0 back on Sept. 22 in Joplin.
