Lions pick up 1-1 double overtime tie at Washburn

, Kan. -- Trailing 1-0 with just over six minutes remaining in regulation, Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) kicked in her team-leading ninth goal of the season and the Missouri Southern Lions finished with a 1-1 double overtime draw against the Washburn Lady Blues in an important MIAA matchup Friday night (Sept. 28) in Topeka, Kan.

The tie keeps the Lions in sole possession of second place in the MIAA with a 4-2-1 conference record.

Llewellyn's score came at the 83:52 mark on a 25 yard free kick after the Lady Blues committed a foul.

The first goal of the match came in the 33rd minute of the first half when Markie Gallagher found a loose ball in the box and put it in the net from seven yards out to put WU ahead 1-0.

The Lions (7-2-2, 4-2-1 MIAA) were able to come away with the tie despite being out-shot 20-5 overall and 6-2 on-goal.

Llewellyn and Stephanie Heines (San Antonio, Texas) led the Lions with two shots apiece, while Jessica Mainz and Manon Englehardt each had four shots each for the Lady Blues (5-4-3, 3-2-2 MIAA).

Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) stopped five shots for Southern and Ashley Klone recorded one save for WU.

Up next for the Lions is a non-conference home date against Northeastern State (Okla.) on Wednesday evening (Oct. 3). The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Hal Bodon Field.
