Lions win 3-1 at
Emporia State
Emporia, Kan. --
Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) scored a goal and dished out one assist
to guide the Missouri Southern Lions to a 3-1 victory over the Emporia
State Hornets in an MIAA contest Thursday evening (Sept. 27) in Emporia,
Kan.
Llewellyn put the Lions (7-2-1, 4-2 MIAA) on top early with her
team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 9:47 mark of the first
half.
But it didn't take long for the Hornets (0-10-0, 0-6 MIAA) to find an
answer as Caitlin Riemer found the net from 40 yards out just over a
minute later to even the match at 1-1.
The Lions would take the lead into the half on Joplin native Lindsey
Altman's second career goal off a pass from Llewellyn in the 29th
minute.
Southern maintained the one-goal lead until Erin Whelan (Belleville,
Ill.) sealed the win with a score from inside the box at the 75:53 mark
of the second half.
Goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made two saves for the Lions, with
Sarah Tetuan stopping seven shots for Emporia, which also recorded a
pair of team saves on the night.
The Lions out-shot the Hornets 22-10 overall, and led in shots-on-goal
at 12-3.
Next up for MSSU is an important road date at Washburn tomorrow night
(Sept. 28) at 7 p.m. in Topeka, Kan. This will be the first matchup of
the season between last year's top two finishers in the MIAA. Last year,
the Lions went 1-1-1 against the Lady Blues, including a 1-1 tie in MSSU's initial NCAA Tournament that resulted in WU advancing on penalty
kicks. The loss to the Lions was the only loss of the season for the
Lady Blues.
