FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo.. -- Stephanie Heines (San Antonio, Texas) and Sarah Evers (Fenton, Mo.) each scored a goal and dished out an assist to lead the Missouri Southern attack as the Lions gained a 5-0 victory over the Missouri Western Griffons Saturday afternoon (Sept. 22) at Hal Bodon Field. Heines scored the Lions' first goal in the 32nd minute off a nice feed from Evers. Evers then got into the scoring act with a goal of her own 10 minutes later to give the Lions (6-2-2, 3-2 MIAA) a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Southern benefited from a Griffons' own goal just 40 seconds into the second half to go up by three goals. Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) kept the Lions on the offensive with her team-leading seventh goal of the season on a header that was set up by a cross from Heines to make it 4-0 Lions in the 60th minute. Lauren Kurelac (Blue Springs, Mo.) then capped off the scoring just 29 seconds later with a goal off an assist from Allison Schaughnessey (St. Louis, Mo.). Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) recorded three saves while recording her fourth shutout of the season. Jenna Weis made five stops for the Griffons (2-8-0, 1-4 MIAA) before being relieved by Shaylynn Milbourn with 23:45 remaining in the match. Milbourn made one save. Kurelac led the Lions with five shots as Southern out-shot the Griffons 16-5 overall and 11-3 on-goal. MSSU will continue MIAA action with a matchup in Emporia, Kan. against the Emporia State Hornets Thursday night (Sept. 27) at 7 p.m.
