FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo.. -- The No. 19-ranked Missouri Southern Lions did not waste any time living up to their first-ever preseason national ranking by exploding for six goals in a 6-0 victory over the Delta State Lady Statesmen to open up the 2007 campaign. The match was played at Fred G. Hughes Stadium due to soggy conditions at Hal Bodon Field. Megan Walker (Grapevine, Texas) got things rolling for the Lions with a goal in the 17th minute, then returning top-scorer Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) punched in a score off a set from Elise Cairo (Loveland, Colo.) to make it 2-0 Southern with 7:13 remaining in the opening half. Ashley Turner (Columbia, Mo.) opened the scoring for the Lions in the second stanza with a goal just 8:31 in to give Southern a three-goal advantage. Joplin native Lindsey Altman then got into the scoring act with her first career goal just 10 minutes later. The Lions (1-0) continued the onslaught when Stephanie Heines (San Antonio, Texas) and Christina Kleekamp (Defiance, Mo.) each added goals off of rebounds to close out the scoring. Goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made five stops for Southern, while DSU goalie Sarah Prevost recorded 10 saves. MSSU out-shot the Lady Statesmen 23-7 overall and enjoyed a whopping 16-5 edge in shots-on-goal. The Lions will next host Harding (Ark.) tomorrow (Aug. 26) beginning at 1 p.m.. The match is currently scheduled to be played at Hal Bodon Field.
