Three separate Lions score in 3-0 win over Northwest Missouri

Joplin, Mo.. -- The Lions didn't wait long to get on the scoreboard today as Megan Walker (Grapevine, Texas) took a pass from Amy Davis (Fenton, Mo.) and scored off the crossbar in the 11th minute, sending Southern to a 3-0 win over visiting Northwest Missouri today at Hal Bodon Field.

Southern (10-3-4, 8-1-3 MIAA) increased its unbeaten streak to 10 matches now, which sets a new school record.

The Lions kept up the pressure and with just under two minutes to play in the first half, Lauren Kurelac (Blue Springs, Mo.) took a center from Erin Whelan (Belleville, Ill.) and beat the keeper to the right, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead going into the half.

At halftime, Southern honored its two seniors on this year's team as Erin Gfeller (Overland Park, Kan.) and Jessica Buhman (Olathe, Kan.) received flowers and framed jerseys from their teammates.

Gfeller added to the memory as in the 74th minute she took the ball, dribbled between two defenders, and lofted a shot over the keeper's head and off the crossbar, landing in the goal for her fourth score of the season.

Northwest (9-8, 5-7 MIAA) was led by two shots from Kayla Griffin. Goalkeeper Alison Sheridan had seven saves.

Whelan led the Lions with five shots, including three on goal, and an assist. Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) had four shots, three on goal. Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) picked up her league-leading ninth shutout of the season. She is one off her own school record of ten set last year.

Southern will go on the road for the final two matches of the year, traveling to Emporia State on October, 27 and Washburn on the 29th. The match with Washburn could decide who wins the MIAA Title.
