FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Joplin, Mo.. -- The Missouri Southern Lions have had a knack for finding ways to win in the closing seconds, and Sunday's 1-0 win over the Truman Bulldogs was no different as Jessica Harthcock (Boerne, Texas) scored her second career goal with just 23 seconds remaining off an assist from Erin Gfeller (Overland Park, Kan.) to propel the Lions to a key MIAA victory. The win is Southern's fourth victory of the season with 28 or fewer seconds remaining. The Lions remain in second place in the MIAA with a 6-1-3 conference mark and a 8-3-4 overall clip. The victory also runs the Lions' current unbeaten streak to eight matches, one shy of the school's all-time mark of nine that was set last year. Southern is 5-0-3 over the current eight-match stretch. The Lions had only two shots-on-goal, but made the most of their opportunities. Southern was out-shot 11-8 overall and 9-1 on-goal, but managed to hold the Bulldogs without any serious scoring threats. Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) turned in another solid effort by recording nine saves on the afternoon, with Lauren Davis stopping one shot for Truman (9-4-2, 4-3-2 MIAA). The Lions should move up in the NCAA Central Region after entering the week as the fifth-ranked squad. The top four teams in the region advance to postseason competition. Missouri Southern will remain at home and host Missouri Western in another MIAA matchup on Saturday (Oct. 21) at 2 p.m. The Lions defeated the Griffons earlier in the year on a goal by Erin Whelan (Belleville, Ill.) from 40 yards out with just eight seconds remaining in the first overtime.
