Lions, Jennies finish in 0-0 double-overtime draw

Joplin, Mo.. -- Neither team could cash in on multiple scoring opportunities as the Missouri Southern Lions and Central Missouri Jennies battled to a 0-0, double-overtime draw in a key MIAA battle Friday night (Oct. 13) at Hal Bodon Field.

The Lions could not find the net despite out-shooting the Jennies 17-11 overall and 11-5 on-goal.

Southern dodged UCM's best scoring opportunity when Hazel Cox's shot attempt sailed just wide with 6:13 remaining in the second overtime period.

Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.), the Lions leading scorer this season, recorded a team-high seven shot-attempts, while Cox led UCM with five shots.

After the Jennies controlled most of the first half and out-shot Southern 6-3, the Lions came out energized after halftime and gained control of the tempo by out-shooting UCM 14-5 in the second half and the two overtime periods.

Goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) stopped five shots for the Lions, while Elizabeth Casey came up with 11 saves for the Jennies.

The Lions entered the contest in second place in the MIAA, with UCM fifth in the conference.  The match also featured important regional implications, as the Jennies entered tonight ranked fourth in the Central region, while Southern was right behind in the fifth spot. The top four teams in each region at the end of the regular season advance to postseason competition.

The Lions are next set for another crucial MIAA match up when they welcome in the defending conference champs and No. 15-ranked Truman Bulldogs into Hal Bodon for a Sunday afternoon (Oct. 15) match beginning at 1 p.m.  The Bulldogs are currently third in the MIAA with a 4-1-2 conference record and a 9-2-2 overall mark.
