Llewellyn's goal helps Lions defeat SBU, gain first place in MIAA

Bolivar, Mo.. -- Sophomore Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) continued her torrid pace by extending her goal-scoring streak to five matches by putting in the game-winning goal just over 10 minutes into the second half to give the Missouri Southern Lions a 1-0 victory over the Southwest Baptist Bearcats and give the Lions sole possession of first place in the MIAA Thursday (Oct. 5) in Bolivar, Mo.

The Lions and Bearcats entered the match tied for second place in the conference behind current No. 22-ranked Washburn, but the win allows the Lions to leapfrog the Lady Blues by one point for first place in the conference.

Llewellyn, the current MIAA Player of the Week, scored her goal off an assist from Lauren Kurelac (Blue Springs, Mo.).

The assist is Kurelac's second of the season after tying for the team lead with five helpers last year.

Llewellyn also led the Lions with three shots and two shots-on-goal in the match.  Amy Swallow paced SBU with five shot attempts, with two on-goal.

The Lions (7-3-3, 5-1-2 MIAA) were out-shot 16-8 by the Bearcats (6-2-4, 4-2-2 MIAA) overall, but the shots-on-goal were even at 4-4.

Goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.)  made four saves for the Lions, while Aline Lopes recorded three stops for SBU.

The Lions will next gear up for another big contest by hosting Central Missouri next Friday night (Oct. 13) at 7 p.m. at Hal Bodon Field.

The match against UCM will kick off a four-match homestand for Southern.
