Harthcock's goal lifts Lions to 3-2 win over Emporia State

Joplin, Mo.. -- Freshman Jessica Harthcock (Boerne, Texas) scored her first career goal off of assists from Lauren Kurelac (Blue Springs, Mo.) and Angie Westphal (Skiatook, Okla.) with just over eight minutes remaining to snap a 2-2 tie and lift Missouri Southern to a critical 3-2 victory over the Emporia State Hornets Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) at Hal Bodon Field.

The victory extends the Lions' unbeaten streak to four matches and improves their record to 6-3-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the MIAA.  The Hornets drop to 3-9-0 overall and 1-6-0 in the conference.

The win also places Southern in a tie for second in the MIAA along with Southwest Baptist, two points behind front-leading Washburn.

After Emporia's Alicia Smith put the Hornets up 1-0 in the 16th minute, Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) responded with her fourth goal of the season eight minutes later to even the match 1-1.

Llewellyn then assisted on a goal by Erin Gfeller (Overland Park, Kan.) to put the Lions up 2-1 at halftime.

The Lions held the lead until the Hornets' Andrea Harris found the net off an assist from Smith to tie the game, 2-2 in the 76th minute and set the stage for Hartcock's game-winning tally just 5:34 later.

MSSU was unable to put away the scrappy Hornets despite controlling the match.  Southern out-shot the Hornets 10-1 in the first half and 16-4 in the second, for a 26-5 shots edge overall.

Lions goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made two saves, while Megan Martin helped keep ESU in the match by making 13 stops.

Missouri Southern will next play at Southwest Baptist (6-1-4, 4-1-2 MIAA) on Thursday (Oct. 5) at 4 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo.

Notes: With five saves over the weekend, Tyler became the Lions' all-time saves leader, with 241 career stops.  She passes Kim Boessen, who recorded 236 career saves from 2000-03.
