Lions knock off #16 Washburn in dramatic fashion

Joplin, Mo.. -- Sophomore Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) scored off a short cross from Erin Gfeller (Overland Park, Kan.) with just five seconds remaining in the first overtime period to lift Missouri Southern (5-3-3, 2-1-1 MIAA) to a dramatic 1-0 win over the previously undefeated Washburn Lady Blues (10-1-2, 5-1-1 MIAA) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30) at Hal Bodon Field.

The goal is Llewellyn's third in as many games after leading the squad with 14 goals last season.

The winning play was nicely set-up as Gfeller raced down the field with a defender close by and dished off to a cutting Llewellyn for the goal from about five yards out.

The match was as close as the final score would indicate, as the shot-attempts were even at 11-11, while the Lions held a slim edge in shots-on-goal, 4-3.

Washburn had a 4-3 advantage over the Lions in corner kicks.

Freshman Stephanie Heines (San Antonio, Texas) paced Southern with four shot-attempts.

Lions goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) and WU keeper Jenna Hatlestad each made three saves in the match.

Missouri Southern will have a quick turnaround by hosting Emporia State (3-8-0, 1-5-0 MIAA) Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) at 2 p.m.
