Lions battle # 22 ranked Truman to 1-1 tie

Kirksville, Mo.. -- For the second consecutive afternoon, the Missouri Southern Lions rallied to battle a top conference nemesis to a 1-1, double-overtime tie.  Today (Sept. 24) it was the defending MIAA champs and No. 22 ranked Truman Bulldogs in Kirksvile, Mo.

As was the case at Central Missouri on Saturday (Sept. 23), the Lions fell behind by one goal, then Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) came up with the game-tying tally that allowed Southern to come away with a tie.

Jessica Wiegert scored the first goal of the match just 1:27 into the second half that gave the Bulldogs a one-goal lead. 

Truman maintained the advantage until Llewellyn scored her second goal in two days off an assist from Ashley Turner (Columbia, Mo.) with 4:32 left in the match to even the match at 1-1.

The Lions (4-3-3, 2-1-2 MIAA) again had to overcome a huge shots disadvantage behind another strong performance from goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.)  Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made 11 saves against 27 Truman shot-attempts.

The Bulldogs (6-2-2, 1-1-2 MIAA) out-shot the Lions 11-1 in the first half and 27-7 overall.  Truman also enjoyed a 12-3 edge in shots-on-goal.

Southern was also forced to hold off nine Truman corner-kick attempts.  The Bulldogs led the Lions 9-1 in corner kicks.

Missouri Southern will next gear up for another huge conference test as the Washburn Lady Blues will visit Hal Bodon Field on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 2 p.m.

Washburn is currently ranked #16 in the nation and has an overall record of 10-0-1 overall and 5-0-0 in the MIAA.
