FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Warrensburg, Mo.. -- After neither team could crack the scoreboard through the first 71 minutes of play, both the Missouri Southern and the Central Missouri Jennies made things interesting by each scoring a goal just over 10 minutes apart to play to a 1-1 tie in a women's soccer MIAA showdown Saturday afternoon (Sept. 23) in Warrensburg, Mo. In the MIAA Preseason Poll, Missouri Southern, Central Missouri and Washburn were picked to finish tied for second, behind defending conference champ Truman. The first goal of the match was scored by the Jennies' Mallory Milburn off a restart off the Lions' goalkeeper Kaney Tyler's (Topeka, Kan.) hands at the 71:04 mark. The Lions (4-3-2, 2-1-1 MIAA) had an answer as Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) scored a goal from 30 yards out to even the 1-1 with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation. The goal is Llewellyn's first of the year after leading the team with 14 scores last season. The Jennies (6-2-1, 1-2-1 MIAA) held a 3-2 shots edge in the two overtime periods, but neither team could find a way to score. Southern stayed in the match behind a strong effort from Tyler throughout the match. Tyler, the reigning MIAA MVP, stopped 11 shots against 23 attempts. Elizabeth Casey made three saves for the Jennies. MSSU was out-shot 23-10 overall and a whopping 12-4 shots-on-goal. But the solid effort from Tyler helped the Lions preserve an important tie on the road. The Lions will next face the defending MIAA Champions Truman Bulldogs Sunday (Sept. 24) at 1 p.m. in Kirksville, Mo. The Bulldogs are 6-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAA this season after battling Southwest Baptist to a 0-0 tie Saturday in Kirksville. The Bulldogs have won seven consecutive MIAA Championships and had a 47 match conference unbeaten streak ended last year against Washburn. Missouri Southern went 1-0-1 against Truman last season. The Lions and Bulldogs played to a 0-0 tie Kirksville, with the Lions then returning home to defeat the Bulldogs 2-1 in Joplin.
