Lions win thriller at Missouri Western

St. Joseph, Mo.. -- Junior Erin Whelan (Belleville, Ill.) scored from 40 yards away with just eight seconds remaining in the first overtime to snap a scoreless tie and give the Missouri Southern women's soccer Lions a dramatic 1-0 win over the Missouri Western Griffons Sunday afternoon (Sept. 17) in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Lions appeared to have the game-winning tally earlier in the overtime session, but it nullified by a offsides call.

The tally is Whelan's second game-winner of the season, as she also scored the deciding goal in a 3-2 Lions win over North Dakota on Sept. 1.

Southern (4-3-1, 2-1 MIAA) controlled the entire match, out-shooting the Griffons (1-4-2, 0-2 MIAA) 15-6 overall and 4-2 on-goal.

The match was a defensive battle in which neither goalkeeper saw much action.  Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) made two saves for the Lions, while Shaylynn Milbourn made three stops for Western.

Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) led the Lions with three shots and one on-goal.

Missouri Southern is next in action at Central Missouri State on Saturday (Sept. 23) afternoon at 1 p.m.
