Lions win thriller over North Dakota

Omaha, Nebraska -- Junior Erin Whelan (Belleville, Ill.) knocked in a goal with just 28 seconds remaining in the second overtime to propel Missouri Southern to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the North Dakota Fighting Sioux Saturday afternoon (Sept. 2) in Omaha, Neb.

The goal was Whelan's second of the match, after scored the game's first goal barely two minutes into the contest to give the Lions an early lead.

Junior Erin Gfeller (Overland Park, Kan.) followed that up with a goal in the 25th minute of play off a pass from sophomore Nikki Llewellyn (O'Fallon, Mo.) to give the Lions a two goal advantage.

The Fighting Sioux got on the board when Mandi Boehmer found the net in the 39th minute of action to cut the Lions lead in half at 2-1.

Southern maintained a one goal advantage until UND's Katie Kobayahshi scored off an assist from Lauren Herrman to with less than six minutes remaining and set up Whelan's heroics.

Junior goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.) recorded five saves for the Lions, while Ashley Rohwher made three stops for UND.

The Lions were out-shot 17-13 overall and 7-6 in shots-on-goal.

MSSU will remain in Omaha, Neb. for a matchup on Sunday (Sept. 3) with the defending Division II National Champions and current No. 1-ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.
