Lions get first win with 1-0 victory over Missouri-St. Louis

The Missouri Southern Lions notched their first win of the season by defeating the Missouri-St. Louis Riverwomen 1-0 in action at the Missouri Southern Invitational Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27) at Hal Bodon Field.

Both teams could each muster only two shots on goal for the entire match, but it was the Lions who made the most of their limited opportunities.

'Southern took a 1-0 lead into halftime after freshman Stephanie Heines (San Antonio, Texas) knocked in a goal off an assist from sophomore Nikki Llewellyn (O Fallon, Mo.) in the 20th minute of action.

Defense was the name of the game the entire afternoon as both combined for only 16 shot attempts, with the Lions holding a 9-7 edge.

Junior goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan.), the reigning MIAA MVP, recorded two saves for the Lions, while UMSL goalkeeper Courtney Carmody made one stop for the Riverwomen.

Llewellyn led the Lions with three shot attempts, while Heines recorded two shots.

Missouri Southern will next travel to Omaha, Neb. for a Saturday (Sept. 2) match against North Dakota at 11:30 a.m., followed by a date with the defending Division II National Champions Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Sunday (Sept. 3) at 1:30 p.m.
