Lions drop season opener to 23rd ranked SIU-Edwardsville

Joplin, MO -- Southern Illinois' Jenny Kates scored a goal in the 50th minute of action, and that turned out to be all the Cougars would need to preserve a 1-0, defensive struggle in the 2006 opener for both teams Saturday afternoon (Aug. 26) at Hal Bodon Field.

The loss negated a solid afternoon by Lions goalkeeper Kaney Tyler, who recorded 14 saves, including two spectacular stops, while facing 25 shot attempts.

The 23rd ranked Cougars controlled the tempo from the start, out-shooting the Lions by 18 and also enjoying a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

SIUE goalkeeper Kaci Banks made six saves, against seven Lions shot attempts.

In other action at the Missouri Southern Invitational, Missouri-St. Louis knocked off Northeastern State (Okla.), 2-1.

The Lions will conclude action at the MSSU Invitational by facing with UMSL Sunday afternoon (Aug. 27) at 1 p.m.
