FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Llewellyn named Athlete of the Week
Freshman wins second Brine®/MIAA
Women’s Soccer Player of the Week
Missouri Southern State University freshman
soccer player Nikki Llewellyn (O’Fallon, Mo./Francis Howell) was
named Brine®/Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association Athlete of the Week on Monday (Oct. 24).
Llewellyn accounted for half of the Lions
scoring as they went 2-0 last week. She scored a pair of
unassisted goals –– her third multiple-goal game
this year –– and assisted on the eventual
game-winner in a 4-1 home win over Emporia State Friday (Oct.
21). She put MSSU on the board in the 27th minute, helped on
sophomore Lauren Kurelac’s goal in the 32nd minute and
completed the scoring in the 86th minute.
In a 2-1 win over Truman, the Lions’
first-ever victory against the Bulldogs, Llewellyn broke into
the scoring column in the fifth minute off the first of two
assists by sophomore Lindsey Robinson.
Llewellyn, the MIAA leader in scoring (1.56
ppg) and goals (0.75 pg), has twice won MIAA Athlete of the
Week honors this year. She first captured the honor on Sept.
12.
Her 12 goals and 25 points this year both
rank fourth on the MSSU single-season list and they’re
also fourth on the career charts. With one more goal, Llewellyn
will tie Tera Reisner for third on the Lions’
single-season list with one more goal. She’ll also tie
Reisner for third on the single-season list with three more
points.
Llewellyn is one of two Lions to earn the
MIAA Athlete of the Week honor this year. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kaney Tyler has won the league’s goalkeeper award three
times.
The conference-leading Lions (10-4-2, 6-2-2
MIAA) return to the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Southwest
Baptist for a 3 p.m. tilt. On Sunday (Oct. 30), Southern hosts
Washburn, one of three teams tied two points back of the Lions
in the MIAA standings.
