Women’s soccer Lions crack NSCAA Top 25
Southern enters new poll at No. 25

Missouri Southern’s women’s soccer team has had a number of firsts in 2005.

Southern had never had a five-match winning streak, nor had it ever had a six-match unbeaten string. That’s all changed in the last few weeks. The Lions had won five in a row before a scoreless tie Sunday (Sept. 18) at Washburn.

In this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas NCAA Division II Women’s Top 25, Missouri Southern comes in at No. 25, marking the first national ranking in the history of the program now in its seventh year.

“It’s a tribute to the effort and work that the players have put in,” said coach Trevor Wachsman, whose Lions hold a 5-2-1 overall record and a 2-0-1 mark in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA).

“But we all still know a lot of work has to be done. It’s still September. We’re still trying to improve every day and every game.”

Missouri Southern, which defeated then-No. 6 South Dakota, 2-1, on Sept. 11, is the only MIAA squad in the top 25. Defending national champion Metro State (Colo.) is atop the poll at 7-0-0, with Seattle Pacific (Wash.), also 7-0-0, close behind. South Dakota remains in the poll at No. 13 and anther MSSU opponent from this year, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, is tied for 17th in the latest ranking.

Missouri Southern has a couple of key tests awaiting in the next six days. Currently tied for the conference lead with Emporia State (2-1-1, seven points), the Lions play at six-time MIAA defending champion Truman State (1-0-1, four points) on Saturday before returning home to play Central Missouri State (2-0-0, six points) on Monday at 6 p.m.
