FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Llewellyn named MIAA Athlete of the Week
Two Missouri Southern State University
student-athletes were named Mid-America Intercollegiate
Athletics Association Athletes of the Week on Monday (Sept.
12).
Nikki Llewellyn (O’Fallon,
Mo./Francis Howell), a 5-foot-7 freshman on the Southern
women’s soccer team, was named Brine/MIAA Women’s
Soccer Player of the Week on Monday. Last week, she scored two
goals including the deciding tally in the Lions’ 2-1
victory over then-No. 6 South Dakota on Sunday (Sept. 11) in
the MSSU Women’s Soccer Classic.
With the Lions leading 1-0, Llewellyn used
assists from sophomores Lauren Kurelac and Erin Gfeller to
score in the 59th minute. The Lions would survive a late charge
by the Coyotes, who scored in the 76th minute.
Llewellyn also scored MSSU’s second
goal in a 2:17 span of the second half off a Gfeller helper as
the Lions downed Augustana (S.D.), 3-0, Saturday (Sept. 10).
She currently leads the Lions in goals (6)
and has scored three of Southern’s four game-winning
tallies this year.
Llewellyn and the Lions resume MIAA play
this week when they travel to Emporia State (Saturday, Sept.
16) and Washburn (Sunday, Sept. 18).
Llewellyn was joined as MIAA Athlete of the
Week by MSSU volleyball junior Ashley Mehrer (Kansas City,
Mo./Winnetonka).
