FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Chapman, Tyler named MIAA Athletes of the
Week
Missouri Southern student-athletes Jordan Chapman (Webb
City, Mo.) and Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan./Seaman HS) were named
Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Athletes of
the Week on Monday (Oct. 31), the league announced.
Chapman, a 6-foot and 184 pound junior, was
named Wilson®/MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week after
he blocked a school-record two punts in Missouri
Southern’s 49-35 loss Saturday (Oct. 29) at then-No. 6
Washburn (Kan.).
Both blocks set up second-half scoring
chances as the Lions tried to rally from a 35-0 halftime
deficit. The first set up a two-play 14-yard scoring drive to
make it 49-28. The second block came on WU’s next
possession and gave MSSU the ball at the Ichabods’ 2. The
Lions scored on the following play to pull within two
touchdowns with 5:17 to go in the game.
Chapman, who also ranks second in the MIAA
with six interecptions, also logged seven tackles (four solo)
in the game.
It marks the second time this season that
Chapman has received a player of the week honor from the MIAA.
He was named Wilson/MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3
after a three-interception game in a 41-17 Homecoming victory
over Truman State.
For his efforts vs. Washburn, Chapman also
garnered honorable mention national special teams player of the
week from D2Football.com.
Tyler, a 5-foot-7 sophomore, was named
Brine®/MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this
season on Monday after she recorded two shutouts as the Lions
played to a pair of scoreless draws last week.
Last Wednesday (Oct. 26) at Southwest
Baptist, Tyler stopped nine of the Lady Bearcats’ 10
shots. In the home tie against Washburn on Sunday (Oct. 30),
she made four saves on nine shots, incvluding a game-saving
stop in the 70th minute of a shot by WU’s Jolene
Silovsky.
The two shutouts ran Tyler’s MSSU
single-season record total to nine on the year. She also holds
the Lions’ career record for shutouts with 12.
The award makes Tyler a four-time winner
this year of the MIAA weekly honor. She also won the award on
Sept. 5, Sept. 26 and Oct. 3.
Missouri Southern’s football team
currently stands at 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the MIAA. The Lions
wrap up their 2005 season on Saturday when they celebrate
Senior Day against Emporia State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at
Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
The Lions’ women’s soccer team
is 10-4-4 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings
with a 6-2-4 league record. Southern can secure its first ever
MIAA women’s soccer championship with wins on Nov. 4 at
Central Missouri State and on Nov. 6 at home vs. Northwest
Missouri State.
