Women’s soccer cracks regional poll
Freshman keeper earns MIAA weekly award

Following a 3-0 start, the Missouri Southern State University women’s soccer team has entered the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Central Region rankings.

The Lions broke into the regional rankings at No. 9 after garnering victories over Wayne State (Neb.), Augustana (S.D.) and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe Northwest Missouri State in the season’s first week. MSSU outscored its first three foes 6-2.

Truman State University, ranked No. 8 nationally, is the top-rated team in the region, followed by Nebraska-Omaha (nationally No. 16), Southwest Baptist (nationally No. 25) and Minnesota State-Mankato. Winona State (Minn.) is No. 5, ahead of North Dakota, Rockhurst and St. Cloud State (Minn.). Emporia State is ranked just behing MSSU at No. 10.

On Monday, Southern and Truman played to a scoreless tie in Kirksville, a draw that halted the Bulldogs’ 23-match MIAA winning streak.

The first NCAA regional rankings of the season do not come out until a later date. NCAA regional polls ultimately determine participants in the postseason.

Also on Tuesday, true freshman goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka, Kan./Seaman HS) was named Wilson/MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5. Tyler made 19 saves in her first three games as a Lion, including six in her shutout on Saturday of Northwest Missouri State.  On Monday at Truman, Tyler faced 22 shots, but saved the Bulldogs’ only three shots on goal.

The weekly period runs from Monday through Sunday. The Lions’ tie with TSU was not included in Tyler’s player of the week award.
