Women’s soccer cracks regional poll
Freshman keeper earns MIAA weekly award
Following a 3-0 start, the Missouri
Southern State University women’s soccer team has entered
the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
Division II Central Region rankings.
The Lions broke into the regional rankings
at No. 9 after garnering victories over Wayne State (Neb.),
Augustana (S.D.) and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics
Association foe Northwest Missouri State in the season’s
first week. MSSU outscored its first three foes 6-2.
Truman State University, ranked No. 8
nationally, is the top-rated team in the region, followed by
Nebraska-Omaha (nationally No. 16), Southwest Baptist
(nationally No. 25) and Minnesota State-Mankato. Winona State
(Minn.) is No. 5, ahead of North Dakota, Rockhurst and St.
Cloud State (Minn.). Emporia State is ranked just behing MSSU
at No. 10.
On Monday, Southern and Truman played to a
scoreless tie in Kirksville, a draw that halted the
Bulldogs’ 23-match MIAA winning streak.
The first NCAA regional rankings of the
season do not come out until a later date. NCAA regional polls
ultimately determine participants in the postseason.
Also on Tuesday, true freshman goalkeeper Kaney Tyler (Topeka,
Kan./Seaman HS) was named Wilson/MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week
for the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5. Tyler made 19 saves in her
first three games as a Lion, including six in her shutout on
Saturday of Northwest Missouri State. On Monday at
Truman, Tyler faced 22 shots, but saved the Bulldogs’
only three shots on goal.
The weekly period runs from Monday through
Sunday. The Lions’ tie with TSU was not included in
Tyler’s player of the week award.
