Southern Cross Country Teams do extremely well at Oklahoma State Jamboree

  The Missouri Southern women defeated 12 different Division I opponents, while taking out No. 1, 11, and 18 in the Division II rankings and the men defeated nine different Division I opponents and defeated both No. 15 and 24 in the Division II rankings at the 2009 Oklahoma State Jamboree today in Stillwater.

The Southern women, who came in to the meet ranked seventh nationally, finished fifth overall and were the top Division II scoring team, taking out No. 1 ranked Adams State, No. 11 ranked Western State, and No. 18 ranked Pittsburg State today.

The men, who came into the race ranked 22nd, placed 10th overall and fourth among Division II squads, but defeated both 15th ranked Pittsburg State and 24th ranked Drury.

Freshman Ashley Siler led the Lions' women and was the second highest finishing Division II runner with an 11th place finish in a time of 17:46.50. Senior Kimi Shank was two places and just a little over one second behind her, while seniors Ashley Bunch was 21st and Courtney Waltbillig was 43rd. Freshman Marlee Tegenkamp and senior Silvia Pineda finished 55th and 59th, while freshmen Kat Oberle (75th) and Dora Eastin (107th) round out the women's results.

The Lions placed four in the top 50 and six in the top 60 in a race that consisted of 211 of some of the NCAA's finest runners.

The Southern men were led by sophomore Aki Nummela who placed 69th with a time of 25:36.90 over the 8k course. Senior Dustin Dixon and freshman Nick Niggeman were 74th and 78th, respectively, while senior Brennan Benkert and junior Josh Mathis placed 88th and 101st. Freshmen Sam Pogue (131st) and sophomore Jake Crocker (217th) round out the Lions' times.

Division II No. 1 ranked Adams State finished third followed by second ranked Western State placing fifth. 14th ranked Central Missouri was seventh, followed by the 22nd ranked Lions placing tenth for four top ten Division II teams at a nationally recognized Division I meet.

The Lions will be back in action next weekend as both teams will have representation in the GLVC/MIAA meet at Missouri S&T, while the men will send a select few runners to the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Border War.
