FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 19, 2009 Lions women second, men fourth at 21st annual Southern Stampede Men's Results | Women's Results Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern women were second and the men were fourth at the 21st running of the Southern Stampede today in Joplin. Three runners on the women's side finished in the top ten as the Lions placed just 22 points behind team champion Arkansas. Senior Kimi Shank (Rolla, Mo.) was third with a time of 17:36.65, finishing just behind two Arkansas runners and placing as the top division II runner in the event. Freshman Ashley Siler (Granby, Mo.) was fifth with a time of 17:42.14, while senior Ashley Bunch (Loose Creek, Mo.) placed eighth with a time of 17:49.94. Freshman Marlee Tegenkamp (Lee's Summit, Mo.) was 14th, while senior Courtney Waltbillig (Rogersville, Mo.) was 15th at 18:07.60. Senior Silvia Pineda (Monett, Mo.) was 21st, while freshmen Kat Oberle (St. Louis, Mo.) and Dora Eastin (Neosho, Mo) were 50th and 64th, respectively. The Lions defeated three other three division II ranked schools (Midwestern State, Harding and Pittsburg State) in the event, while defeating another NAIA ranked team (Lindenwood). The Southern men finished fourth overall, but were just nine points behind third place Southwest Baptist and 17 points behind second place Pittsburg State. The University of Arkansas took the men's title, as well. Sophomore Jarkko Jarvenpaa (Tampere, Finland) was 25th with a time of 24:50.88, while senior Brennan Benkert (St. Clair, Mo.) was 27th with a time of 24:52.38. Freshman Nick Niggeman (Potosi, Mo.) was 30th with a time of 24:54.30. Sophomore Josh Mathis (Potosi, Mo.) was 43rd, finishing with a time of 25:13.27, while sophomore Aki Nummela (Helsinki, Finland) was 59th at 25:29.64. Senior Dustin Dixon (St. Clair, Mo.) was 85th, while freshman Sam Pogue (Springfield, Mo.) placed 93rd. Sophomore Jake Crocker (Lebanon, Mo.) and freshman Andrew Webb (Webb City, Mo.) finished with times of 26:50.73 and 27:26.10, respectively. The Lions men defeated both 11th ranked Harding and 24th ranked Drury today, as well as both top 25 NAIA schools that participated. A total of 358 men and 359 women raced in the collegiate races today at the Stampede with more than 1,300 high school and recreational runners competing in the other races. The Lions will be off this week before traveling to Oklahoma State on October 3 for the OSU Jamboree. |
