Southern Women First, Men Second At NCAA Division II Regional


San Antonio, Texas. -- The Missouri Southern women defended their NCAA Division II South Central Regional Title and the men were second as both teams qualified for Nationals today while competing at the regional meet held in San Antonio.

The Southern women placed two runners in the top ten and four in the top 30 as junior Kimi Shank (Rolla, Mo.) placed second, just ten seconds off of Abilene Christian's Winrose Karunde. Senior Kara Eckard (Warrensburg, Mo.) finished seventh with a time of 21:58.3, while junior Courtney Waltbillig (Rogersville, Mo.) was 18th. Senior Kari Fritchie (Lees Summit, Mo.) was 29th, while junior Victoria Kline (Miami, Okla.) placed 32nd. Sophomores Silvia Pineda (Monett, Mo.) and Olga Bulgarova (Jefferson City, Mo.) placed 37th and 42nd, respectively.

The Lions came into the meet ranked 8th nationally and number one in the region and will go into the National Meet as a top ten team for the second-straight year.

The Southern men placed four runners in the top 20, but couldn't overcome national number one ranked Abilene Christian who had the race's top four finishers. Freshman Jarkko Jarvenpaa (Tampere, Finland) was tenth with a time of 31:56.3 in the 10k race. Freshman Aki Nummela (Helsinki, Finland) placed 14th, while Junior Brennan Benkert (St. Clair, Mo.) and freshman Chris Bell (Branson, Mo.) were 18th and 19th, respectively. Freshman Shawn Goebel (Washington, Mo.) was 78th, while freshman Deric Kimrey (Lebanon, Mo.) was 120th.

The Lions will make their third-straight appearance in the NCAA Division II National Meet. Southern came into the meet ranked 21st nationally and fourth in the region.

Last year, the Southern men placed 12th nationally and the women were 13th as the meet was held at Missouri Southern's Cross Country Course at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Both teams will make the trek to Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania for the Division II National Championship Meet, held on November 22.
