FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 11, 2008 Kimi Shank and Lions women win Border Wars Edwardsville, Ill. -- Southern junior Kimi Shank (Rolla, Mo.) took home the individual title and the women won the team title as both men's and women's teams competed at the Missouri/Illinois Border Wars today at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. The Southern men finished ninth as a team. Shank won the 5k race with a time of 18:01.96, nearly 19 seconds in front of her nearest competitor. Kara Eckard (Warrensburg, Mo.) finished fourth with a time of 18:38.99, while Courtney Waltbillig (Rogersville, Mo.) was 21st. Victoria Kline (Miami, Okla.) finished right behind Waltbillig at 22nd, while Kari Fritchie, Olga Bulgarova and Silvia Pineda were 29th, 35th and 44th. The Lions defeated second place Pittsburg State by 18 points and an average time of 13 seconds per runner. Truman was third followed by Washington University (Mo.) and Bellermine University to round out the top five. The Lions men were led by freshman Chris Bell (Branson, Mo.) who finished 24th with a time of 27:01.96 in the 8k course. Freshman Derek Mendell (Carthage, Mo.) was 47th, while junior Brennan Benkert (St. Clair, Mo.) was 49th. Shawn Goebel (Washington, Mo.) was 62nd, while Deric Kimrey (Lebanon, Mo.) was 98th. Paradise Valley Community College won the team title and was followed by Pittsburg State, Central Missouri, Truman and Bellermine to round out the top five. Both teams will have a week off before they look to defend their MIAA Titles in two weeks (Oct. 25) at the 2008 MIAA Championships at Central Missouri. |
