Men's and Women's cross country squads place nine on All-Region
list/Coaches sweep Region Coach of the Year honors
Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern men's and
cross country teams placed nine athletes, four women and five
men, on the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches
Association South Central All-Region team, as announced by the
organization today. Coaches Tom Rutledge and Patty Vavra were
also named Regional Coaches of the Year.
Kimi Shank, Kara Eckard, Ashley
Bunch and Courtney Waltbillig all finished in the top 14,
helping the Southern women to the 2007 NCAA Division II South
Central Regional Championship this past Saturday at Hughes
Stadium. The Lions defeated Abilene Christian by 36 points.
Dustin Dixon, Isaac Garcia, Ryan
Arthur, Brennon Benkert, and Dustin Miller all placed in the top
13, helping the Southern men upset defending National Champion
Abilene Christian and claiming the 2007 NCAA Division II South
Central Championship. The Lions defeated ACU by 14 points last
Saturday.
Vavra and Rutledge led their
teams to a second-straight MIAA Cross Country Titles this year.
It was the third championship in Vavra's career and the seventh
in the last eight seasons for Rutledge.
Both teams will be in action on
Saturday, November 17 when Southern plays host to the 2007 NCAA
Division II Cross Country National Championships at the Southern
Cross Country Course and Hughes Stadium.
