Cross Country teams repeat as MIAA Champions

Dustin Dixon was the men's individual champion while the women placed four in the top ten as both the Missouri Southern men's and women's cross country teams repeated today as Conference Champions at the MIAA Cross Country Championships at Truman State University.

Southern's men picked up their seventh title in the last eight years, while the women won their second title in a row.

Led by first and second place finishes from Dustin Dixon and Dustin Miller, the men defeated second place Southwest Baptist by 18 points. The Lions had four runners in the top 16 of the race with Brennon Benkert and Isaac Garcia finishing 10th and 11th, respectively and Ryan Arthur picking up 16th place.

Dixon finished the 8k course in a time of 26:07.34 and was followed by his teammate Dustin Miller who finished at 26:15.38. Benkert finished with a time of 26:42.82, while Garcia was just nine seconds behind at 26:51.24. Arthur picked up a time of 27:08.43. Kyle Davis finished 36th with a time of 28:23.49, while Derek Wright was 58th at 29:33.08. Dixon, Miller and Benkert all earned All-MIAA honors for their top-ten finishes.

SBU was second, followed by Pittsburg State, Emporia State and Central Missouri to round out the top five.

The Lion women won their third event in a row highlighted by four runners in the top ten as Kimi Shank (2nd), Ashley Bunch (5th), Kara Eckard (7th) and Courtney Waltbillig (10th) all earned All-MIAA honors today.

The Lions defeated second place Pittsburg State by 32 points. Southern and PSU accounted for six of the top ten runners in the field.

Kimi Shank finished the 6k course in second with a time of 22:42.63. Emporia State's Janel Rossbach won her second straight MIAA Individual Title with a time of 22:06.65.

The Lions had all five scorers in the top 20 and a sixth runner finished 22nd today. Bunch finished fifth with a time of 23:27.88, while Kara Eckard and Courtney Waltbillig turned in times of 23:30.49 and 23:45.25, respectively. Victoria Kline was 19th at 24:15.44, while Kari Fritchie finished 22nd with a time of 24:22.86. Taylor Whitacre was 34th at 25:19.93 and OIga Bulgurova and Krista Merril finished 37th and 38th with times of 25:27.99 and 25:29.57. Alison Walker was 44th with a time of 25:55.26.

Both teams will now gear up for the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Meet to be held on November 3 at the Missouri Southern Cross Country Course. The Southern women will go into the meet ranked first in the region, while the men are currently ranked fourth. However, the men defeated both Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri today, both in front of them in the regional standings, and should move up in the poll when it is released early next week.
