Women win, men 10th in weekend cross country competition

Joplin, Mo. -- Kimi Shank and the Missouri Southern women's cross country team finished first, while the men were 10th out of 17 schools as the two teams competed at large, prestigious events today.

The women, behind five runners in the top 13 and seven in the top 25, won the Maroon Division at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational today in Chicago. Kimi Shank ran the 5k course in a time of 18:09, winning by 18 seconds over her nearest competition.

Kara Eckard was third, while Courtney Waltbillig, Kari Fritchie and Ashley Bunch finished 6th, 11th and 13th, respectively. Taylor Whitacre was 22nd, and Victoria Kline was 24th. Alison Walker was 38th while Krista Merrill and Olga Bulgarova 54th and 65th, respectively.

Southern won the team competition over Findlay by nearly 80 points. Ferris State was third, while Northern Kentucky and St. Xavier rounded out the top five.

The Southern men ran in the Oklahoma State Jamboree and finished 10th among 17 teams, placing fifth among Division II opponents and defeating three Division I opponents in the process.

The Lions were led by Dustin Dixon who ran the 8k course in a time of 26:04 to finish 39th. Isaac Garcia ran a 26:40, while Kyle Davis and Ryan Arthur were at 26:52 and 26:59, respectively. Dustin Miller ran a 27:16 and Brennon Benkert finished with a time of 27:38.

The host Cowboys won the team title, while Division II Abilene Christian finished second. Arkansas was third followed by Tulsa and South Plains (Tx.) College to round out the top five. SBU finished seventh, while Fort Hays was 14th.

Both teams will be back in action next weekend when the men travel to Fort Hays State and the women are at SIU - Edwardsville.
