Southern men finish first, women second at Missouri/Illnois Border Wars

Edwardsville, IL -- The Southern men placed four runners in the top 20 and the women placed four among the first 30, powering the men to the team title while the women placed second at the annual Missouri/Illinois Border Wars at Southern Illinois - Edwardsville.

Sophomore Dustin Dixon finished eighth to help pace the Lions. He ran the 8k course in a time of 25:34. Bret Musser finished 13th with a time of 25:44. Kyle Davis and Ryan Arthur were 16th and 19th with times of 25:49 and 25:54. Brennon Benkert finished 39th with a time of 26:08, while Isaac Garcia and Anthony Reed were 61st and 63rd with times of 26:56 and 26:57. Ricky Armstrong finished 79th with a time of 27:10.

Rend Lake College finished second, while Southwest Baptist, Central Missouri, and Washington (Mo.) University rounded out the men's top five finishers. Rend Lake freshman Elkanah Kibet won the individual medalist title with a time of 24:31.

Kimi Shank and Kara Eckard finished 15th and 17th with times of 18:33 and 18:37 to help the women to a second place finish, 34 points behind Washington (Mo.) University. Krista Merrill and Abbey Adams finished 24th and 26th with times of 18:54 and 18:57. Courtney Waltbillig was 36th at 19:07, while Kari Fritchie was 95th with a time of 20:00.

Washington finished first while Southern, Southwest Baptist, Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky rounded out the women's top five.

The Southern men had been ranked in the top 25, but dropped out this week. The Lions, however, finished in front of five other MIAA schools including 10th ranked SBU. The women did move into the top 25 this week debuting at 24. They finished in front of five other MIAA schools including 18th ranked SBU, 23rd ranked Pittsburg State and 21st ranked Central Missouri.

Both teams will have this week off to rest and train for the MIAA Championships which will be held at Southwest Baptist on October 21.
