Three from MSSU cross country honored
NCAA-II Cross Country Coaches name All-Academic athletes

Three members of the Missouri Southern State University cross country teams were named to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II All-Academic Team announced recently.

From the MSSU women’s squad, Ashley Caffey (Lebanon, Mo.) and Erin Click (West Plains, Mo.) received the honor. The Lion men had Dustin Miller (Carthage, Mo.) named to the team.

Caffey, a senior communications major, holds a 3.41 grade-point average. In 2004, she finished third, for all-conference honors, at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championships and 12th, for all-region honors, at the South Central Region Championships. Caffey finished her cross country career as as three-time All-MIAA runner and a two-time all-region performer.

Click, a junior environmental science major, enjoyed her best cross country season as a Lion in 2004. She earned All-MIAA honors with a fifth-place finish at the conference meet and grabbed all-region accolades with a 13th-place showing at the South Central Regional. In the classroom, Click maintains a 3.25 GPA.

Miller is a sophomore education major with a 3.25 GPA. He was among the MSSU top four runners through much of the season and helped the Lions to a fifth straight berth in the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. Miller finished has finished in the top 40 at the MIAA Championships in each of his first two seasons.

To be eligible for the individual award, student-athletes must, 1) have completed at least 24 semester hours through the semester of competition, 2) have at least a 3.25 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale through the semester of competition, 3) have placed in the top 30 percent of the total number of athletes eligible to compete in the regional championship.

The Missouri Southern women’s team also earned a team academic award from the coaches association. The Lions hold a 3.36 team GPA and were listed among the 77 NCAA-II women’s teams around the country to receive the honor. Teams must have a GPA of at least 3.0 to be listed.

For both the individual and team award, nominating coaches must be a current member of the NCAA Division II Cross Country Coaches Association.
