Missouri Southern State University cross country athletes Paul Koehler (Sunset Hills, Mo./Lindbergh) and Megan Russell (Jefferson City, Mo.) swept the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association athlete of the week awards announced on Tuesday.

Koehler, a 6-foot and 140-pound senior, finished sixth overall at the Disney World Cross Country Classic in Orlando, Fla. He completed the 8K course in a season-best time of 25 minutes, 19.09 seconds as the Lions finished seventh in the 14-team field. Koehler has led the MSSU squad in three straight meets.

Russell, a 5-foot-4 junior, placed fifth in the Missouri-Illinois Border Wars on Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill. She clocked in at 18 minutes, 30.46 seconds on the 5,000-meter course as the Lions finished as the top MIAA team and second overall to Northern Michigan 70-135. Russell led three MSSU runners in the top 15 and was the Lions’ top finisher for the fourth time in as many meets.

It marked the second straight week for Russell to win the MIAA award. Koehler has also won it twice this season.
