Lions add point guard transfer for 2008

Joplin, Mo. - The Missouri Southern Lions women's basketball squad has added transfer Tia Evenson for the upcoming 2008-09 season.

Evenson is a 5-6 senior guard from Neodesha, Kan. that played two years at Fort Hays State before transferring to Nova Southeastern University of the Sunshine State Conference.

During her two seasons at FHSU, Evenson led the team in assists each season and helped the Lady Tigers to a overall record of 43-15 and an appearance in the NCAA II Regionals in 2004-05.

At NSU, Evenson started 15 games in 2006-07 and averaged 5.5 points and dished out 78 assists.  She also recorded 35 steals and shot 80.3 percent (49-of-61) from the free-throw line. She sat out the 2007-08 season at NSU due to injury.

Evenson played four years at Neodesha High School and was a four-time all-conference selection and was named team MVP for two seasons.  She was also a three-time all-state selection and averaged 22 points. four rebounds and four assists for Neodesha.

"Tia will fill an immediate need for the upcoming season," said MSSU head coach Maryann Mitts. "She is a true point guard who has already proven that she can lead a team to the NCAA's. It was important to bring in a player who understands the importance of leading a team on the floor. Tia is a tough, gritty player who has the capability of producing big numbers if needed. We will look for her to initiate our offense and ignite our defense, both requiring communication and her energy/passion for the game.  We expect her to be an extension of our coaching staff both on and off the court."
