Career night from Kantin not enough and Lions fall at seventh ranked Emporia State, 82-61

Emporia, Kan. - Despite a career-high 24 points from Robin Kantin (Silver Spring, Md.), seventh ranked Emporia State used a 17-4 run to start the game and pushed the lead to 44-22 at the half and defeated Missouri Southern 82-61 at White Auditorium tonight in Emporia.

Southern (10-4, 3-3 MIAA) fell behind 16-4 at the first media timeout after two three pointers from Emporia's (12-3, 5-1 MIAA) Michelle Stueve and one from Cossandra Boston. With 4:54 left, the lead was 32-13, after another three from Stueve. The Lions would trail 44-22 at the half. Stueve had 20 points on 5-8 shooting and 4-6 from long range.

Kantin led the Lions with 10 points. Southern shot 26 percent in the half, while the Lady Hornets shot 46 percent from the field and 70 percent from the three point line.

The Lions cut the lead to 18 (53-35) at 13:25 of the second half on a free throw from India Wood (Decatur, Ala.). Despite seven points from Kantin in the final 4:30, the Lions couldn't get any closer.

Kantin went 9-20 from the field and 2-4 from long range for 24 points to lead the Lions. She added six rebounds. Fatai Hala'api'api (Lahaina, Hi.) scored 10 points and had eight rebounds. Southern shot 39 percent from the field and 85 percent from the free-throw line. They out rebounded Emporia 36-33, but 21 Southern turnovers led to 12 Lady Hornet points. Southern out scored Emporia 36-24 in the paint.

Stueve finished with 26 points and eight rebounds going 7-14 from the field and 6-9 from long range. She made all six free throws. Boston and Andrea Leiker both scored 16. The Lady Hornets had 10 three pointers, shooting 63 percent from long range.

Southern will come home and play host to Fort Hays State this Saturday, January 20 at 5:30 pm in Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
